UV-A, UV-B, UV-What??

Sunscreen today comes in so many varieties and with so many different features, it can cause a lot of confusion! If you don’t know what you’re looking for in a sunscreen, here are some tips that can help you pick the best products to keep you kids safe in the summer sun!

The best sunscreen will contain ingredients that protect for UVA (both UV-A 1 and UV-A 2) and UV-B. Zinc Oxide is an ingredient that blocks all of them.

  • SPF is the Sun Protection Factor: a measure of a sunscreen’s ability to prevent UV-B rays from damaging the skin. In theory, if it takes 10 minutes for your skin to redden without any protection, SPF 15 will prevent you from reddening 15x longer: about 2 and a half hours.
  • SPF 50 will filter out 98% of UV-B rays, but you need something that will also block UV-A.
  • Broad Spectrum Sunscreen blocks both UV-A and UV-B, when rated at SPF 15 or above. Anything not labeled “Broad Spectrum” will only prevent against sunburn, and not against sun damage that can lead to skin cancer.
  • Zinc Oxide is a powdered mineral that is commonly included in sunscreen. It sits on top of the skin, scattering and absorbing both UV-A and UV-B, and also is not absorbed by the skin (non-nano particles >30nm). Zinc Oxide has a tendency to not rub in/remain white on the skin, so many people prefer to use products with Clear Zinc Oxide, which will rub in, and does not remain white on the skin.

So, next time you are in the sunscreen aisle at the drugstore, make sure to pick a product labeled Broad Spectrum, between SPF 30 and 50. Extra bonus if the product also contains Clear Zinc Oxide for added protection!

Children and Online Safety

The European Union is seeking to make it more difficult for children to lie about their age online. An ‘electronic authentication system’ has been proposed in order to verify the age of internet users.

On Wednesday, the European Commission released a new action plan for protecting kids online, a “pan-European framework for electronic authentication.” Simply put, it’s a system that could prove people’s ages online, specifically targeted at teens and younger children.”

Couple Turns to Twitter to Adopt.

Rick and Erika Jones have been on a small local adoption agency’s waiting list for more than two years. Unlike larger adoption agencies, their Berkeley-based organization doesn’t have the financial means to extensively market their clients. Nor do Rick and Erika have the money to go through a larger adoption agency.

To what lengths would you go to secure an adoption?

Should you put sunscreen on infants? Not usually. The best approach is to keep infants under 6 months out of the sun, especially between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
But when you are outside together, here are some of the most important ways to protect your infant from the harmful rays of the sun: an umbrella and brimmed hat for shade, a cooler for liquids, a bottle for hydration, and clothing for covering the skin.
